This picture is interesting. It shows most of Silas Sanford Smith sons. Five of the ten are from the union of Silas and Martha E.Smith,(George, Curtis, Francis, Asael, and Autsin).

After Grandfather Silas was released as Stake President, his son Albert was called to replace him.
In the historcial novel, 'The Undaunted' by Gerald Lund, Grandfather Smith is acknowledged as the leader of the 'Hole in the Rock' expedition in southeastern Utah. But because of illness, lack of supplies, Grandfather was not present during most of the expedition. He was later called to go on to the San Luis Valley to head the colony and obtain land for the saints coming from Utah and the converts from the southern states.
